Continuing Adventures of a Bubblecar Fish

In 1990 the only Candy Flip album “Madstock - the continuing Adventures of a Bubblecar Fish” was released. The duo, founded by Danny Spencer & Ric Peet, previously had a number 3 hit with the Beatles cover “Strawberry Fields Forever”.  The song is now considered a rave (?) classic and is one of the Madchester anthems of the time. For me the song opened the door to their sound, but I was never a big fan of this number 3 single. More interesting at first were their B-sides and other 12" inch singles, which were often a lot more club-oriented.

However, they got me with their “Madstock” album. Dance beats, TB303 lines and synth-pop influences like Pet Shop Boys, New Order and The Beloved were pretty much my cup of tea. Many albums don't stand the test of time, but I still enjoy listening to this one to this day, and certainly preferably in the summer months. An album without gap fillers, perfect with ice cream and a parasol. And another album that I'm sure doesn't have many fans (anymore) and is probably forgotten. Wrongly.

Madstock was surprisingly well-received from a group considered to be a one-hit wonder. However, Candy Flip split up in 1992 after the English rave scene faded into history. Peet became a producer and engineer, working with bands such as the Charlatans U.K. and Six By Seven. Spencer joined Remix DJ Team Sure is Pure & later Sound 5, recording the full-length No Illicit Dancing in 2000.“
